Ascent Trip Report

Took the Ridge south on good trail. Alot more up and down than shows on map. The last few 100 feet to summit were quite Rocky. Vaune and I had it to ourselves for a change. We moved very quickly because the clouds were getting quite thick. I convinced myself that Jim Davis' statement that clouds with flat bottom were probably stable was aplicable. Looked for the faint trail to directly descend from Sunshine. Found it just barely south of the gendarmes on the ridge line. Looked good from the top, but seemed to disappear halfway down the talus. Looked like descent would be enhanced by couloirs around lower Gendarmes being full of snow. Didn't see trail down the valley, but here is a large cairn (no sign) where the trail meets main Silver Creek trail. Stream crossing a problem On return, surprised to see several parties heading over to Sunshine....including 3 guys whom we met below on the return who took the direct route down from Sunshine. Said it was heel plunging and sometimes sliding on butt. 2 hiking poles also worked. Avoided the snow through the gendarmes (why??). Return back to Redcloud was quite exhausting, never seemed to end. Vaune struggled here, she told me later...met Terry Matthews, returning very slowly from Sunshine by himself.
