Ascent Trip ReportLeft Lakewood Friday ~ 3pm ?, I missed the turn at Copper Mtn for Leadville, then missed the fact that the Vail Pass rest stop was a turn around. Ended up driving into Vail and getting McDonalds, rather than the planned nice meal in Leadville. US 24 through Red Cliff was beautiful but very, very slow...35mph most of the way. Arrived in Leadville about 910pm. Vaune very supportive of me during my frustration. Vaune and I stayed in the quite nice Swiss Chaletlike Columbine Inn Leadville. Random pick online, appeared to be the nicest (avoid Avalanche, Alps, Hitching Post ) Up at 5am hoping we could get into Contintental breakfast but locked door. Consequently had something cold for breakfast.
Drove about 20 miles on US24 (~ 65mph thru here) to Chaffee 390 at Clear Creek reservoir. Oiled road ~ 3 miles than gravel mostly 20mph to Winfield. Turned south across the bridge and road deteriorated very quickly. we got maybe .5 miles further and parked...good thing too. at 650am and 10200ft? Walked about 2 miles up the road (only one vehicle passed us) and found the trailhead had lots of beautiful campsites, and maybe 20 vehicles here. At the official trailhead about 720am There was the Gunnison Spur of the Colorado trail here, both at 10500 feet.
Trail was nice, but climbed very quickly. Saw the 3 apostles as advertized at 11700? ft. Quickly into a nice bowl. bowl had a fair amount of snow and bog. Tons of Marsh Marigolds. Ran into a couple of women, one who Vaune and I both recalled from CMC. Trail was nice up until the last 500 feet vertical. Ontop at 1130 , found a large group, mostly from Rocky Mtn scramblers, a hookup group from Denver.
Identified Elbert, LaPlata, Missori and Belford peaks.
Feet pretty painful on the way down. Stopped at the Wildlife refuge FREE camping area at inlet of Clear Creek reservoir to soak feet in the very high Clear Creek. Brand new Colorado trail bridge here....appears to be built before the trail rerouted...according to CMC CT book, trail goes through the Dude Ranch. Drove back home through Leadville and US 119?
