My 38th of 39 summits for the Catskill 3500; my 9th winter Catskill 3500 peak and the 95th mountain of the year, 119th ascent of the year.
When I was younger my Dad got me into hiking but we never recorded the dates exactly. On this very same date in 2011 my friend Cory asked me to go for a hike with him because he was working on his Catskill 3500, we gather 3 of our other friends and the 5 of us summated Black Head, then Black Dome and Thomas Cole that day. It was at this point that I decided to start recording dates and actively work on my Catskill 3500 as well.
I summated the mountains with various friends, family and dogs I was watching. As I summated more and more peaks as summer came to a close, my Dad asked if we could finish our Catskill 3500 together. I agreed and ended my summer break still needing to summit Panther in the winter, Balsam in the winter, Eagle, North Dome and Sherrill. I told him I didn't want to end on a peak that I had to do twice and that I wanted to finish the 3500 by finishing with something that I haven't already done plus signing a canister would be a great way to conclude all the adventures I had. On December 21 I participated in the Saranac Lake 6er Winter Ultra challenge and finished 10th. I took the 22nd off and on the 23rd and 24th I did my final final two winters plus Eagle. I then had to wait for my Dad to catch up and he took Friday off from work to get his winter summit of Black Head and his own winter summit of Balsam on Saturday.
THE ACTUAL REPORT:
approx 45 minutes in: Mink Hollow Reserve, and sign, hair pin turn (1.55 miles) its wet here and we could see the summit through the leafless trees. so we picked lines to avoid cliffs. 15 minutes into the bushwhack we found two red flags on trees. Not sure what they are for and we didn't use them to try and navigate, good thing too since those where the only two we saw. We reached the summit after exactly 1 hour of bushwhacking.
We then bushwhacked down the other side and followed the tongue of North Dome to get to Sherrill and avoid its cliffs on the northeastern side. It took us 30 minutes to reach the Valley of Screams, named because of the pricker bushes and stinging needle. We then headed up Sherrill and after another 30 minutes we summated and celebrated our completion of the Catskill 3500!
We then bushwhacked back down to the Valley of Screams and then in a northeasterly direction towards the car and the road. We eventually and unexpectedly found a old logging road that followed a stream. once we got around the ridge and went for another 20 minutes we found a sharp turn in both the petering out trail and the stream. there was a small hill that looked clear to our right so we climbed up to see what we could see. There were no posted signs and we could see Spruceton Road so we cut across the field and back into the woods towards the trail head.
We eventually came to a piece of land that was obviously not state land but again had no posted signs, climbed up a small hill found their pill of horse poop (didn't get close to it) and said, lets just get on the road so we don't go through anyone else's property. We walked down their drive way and saw 4 beautiful black work horse and a women and we asked if we could continue to use their drive way and bridge.
She gave us permission and as we went to cross the bridge her son was driving across, we moved to let him pass and he stopped to talk to us. Nice family, he then came back with dry towels and when we where 5 minutes from the TH on the road. and he told us about his families farm business and the Catskill club he was in for hunting big bucks. We congratulated each other on our respective clubs and and parted ways. As we drove back out of Spruceton we stopped by their house to thank them for their generosity and to purchase the eggs and butter we where told about. Best butter I've ever had and biggest chicken eggs I've ever seen!
