Ascent Trip Report

5 of us went out for a ridge snowshoe trip only to leave the shoes in our packs the entire day due to the lack of cover. We ended up making a loop to avoid the tedious ridge return in the thin snow.

We started at the Mowich Lake entrance and ascended the old Boundary Trail. The first snow patches were encountered at 4200 ft. We left the trail below Virginia Peak and proceeded to follow the ridge up and over it, and then over Razzleberry and Berry peaks, continuing until hitting the trail west of Eunice Lake that leads up to Tolmie Peak Lookout.

The overcast gave way to drizzle by the first peak, rain by Berry Peak, and finally rain/snow just below Tolmie. We arrived at the lookout in a full storm with wind, snow/rain, and no views. Roger and I made a half-hearted attempt at the true summit but the rimed narrow ridge, and hard snow ended up being beyond my comfort limit with out crampons. The others were also wet and waiting in the lee of the lookout, so after reaching the first bump between the lookout and the true summit I decided to call it and leave the summit for another time.

At this point we decided to take the trail back towards Mowich Lake, then dropped through the woods to catch the road at 4,400 ft. From there it was a wet walk to the car, arriving after dark.

Good exercise, but we probably should have waited a day on the weather.
