Ascent Trip Report

Windy and cold. I was happy to have my puffy jacket. The view was beautiful. With high clearance, you can drive all the way to the communication towers right next to the summit. I parked about 0.75 from the summit because I wanted to call it a hike; so about 1.5 miles round trip with 200' elevation gain for my hike.

Surprise Tank Petroglyphs: This site is really close to Rodman HP; so I went and checked it out. There are some petroglyphs in a couple sites, but there has been a lot of damage and newer rock art added; so not a great site. Maybe if one spent more time looking around in the area, they would find some less damaged areas. There is an itaglio and a rock alignment site, but you can't really tell what was in the fenced areas anymore - maybe the BLM decided they were not authentic and that is why the site is no longer maintained. I'd like to go back on a less windy day and check out what is marked as an Indian Burial Ground closer to the Pisgah Crater another time to see if there are more petroglyphs in that area - I'd also like to check out the lava tubes.
