Ascent of Brushy Mountain on 2008-07-15| Date: | Tuesday, July 15, 2008 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | 4x4 Vehicle | | Peak: | Brushy Mountain | | Location: | USA-New Mexico | | Elevation: | 7600 ft / 2316 m |
Ascent Trip ReportBe aware, this has an active FAA station on top. Road is a gated shortly before the peak and negatively signed. You can approach summit via easy terrain besides the road. The actual summit is fairly open and you will be visible. FAA personnel and living quarters are on site. There is a motion detector along the FAA road above the gate. I was lucky to run into a friendly FAA employee who tolerated my presense and even helpfully pointed out potential HP rocks. It seems to be towards the SW end of the contour. Were I to do it again, which I won't, I would park at 7200 and go up the SSE ridge. This avoid parking near the signed gate or going past any other signage. Also, circle slightly around clockwise at the end and you can come at the HP from the SW such that you are in forest the longest and so that you don't have to cross past the facilities as you do on the NE ridge/road approach.
