Ascent Trip ReportMy hiking partner, Elizabeth, and I ascended Phelps in our quest to complete the ADK 46 high peaks. We started at the ADJ Loj parking lot, taking the blue Van Hoevenberg trail to the red spur trail leading to Phelps Mountain. The weather did not cooperate and it rained for at least half the hike, making for a very soggy trip (especially after I fell in the brook while trying to cross!). Due to cloud cover we had no views of the surrounding peaks. But, on the positive side, we had some most excellent trail mix and fluffernutter sandwiches that got us going for the return trip.
We also tried something new this time, bringing our respective dogs. The dogs put up with the weather well but were, I think, as happy as we were when we got back to the car.
Rain and mud aside, Phelps was a moderate hike, at 8.8 miles, over mostly level terrain. The last mile was where the elevation change came in, and the rocks and exposed tree roots made it feel like much more than 1 mile. Trip time was 6.5 hours, which included about half an hour at the top for lunch.
