Ascent Trip Report

Nice hike, beautiful country side... We were greeted by a ranger when we arrived to Grayson Highland state park around 8AM who was extremely friendly and helpful. We started at the overnight backpackers parking lot up Rhododendron trail to the AT. After 1/2 mile we encountered some wild ponies and said hi. From there we stayed on Rhododendron 2 miles (you can also split off onto the AT earlier. Some more nice views. 2 miles into the hike we came upon some more wild ponies and made friends with them. After about 2.5 from the parking lot you reach the AT and go left and follow it about 1.5mi to a spur trail which leads another .5 to the summit. The summit is densely wooded (no view) and would have had a tough time finding it if someone had not duct taped a US flag above it to a tree. The trail ends here, so look for the highest rock in the little clear area - the geological survey marker is on top. Nothing too challenging; 9 miles total I guess, we were probably dragging a bit from spending so much time in the car and not really sleeping
Summary Total Data
    Quality:4 (on a subjective 1-10 scale)
Nice, About 40 on summit according to ranger, no snow on ground
