Ascent Trip ReportCamped at Atwell Friday night. Saw five bears over the course of the weekend, very active.
Late start Saturday morning. Took our time coming up Sawtooth Pass. Gorgeous terrain and views; the loose sand switchbacks up to Sawtooth Pass did little to dampen our spirits. Traversed eastward from Sawtooth Pass. Abundant cairns made navigation pretty easy. Register on the top showed that the most recent signature had been a few days prior.
Came down the west face of Sawtooth Peak towards Monarch Lakes since we saw clear footprint tracks leading down. Horrific idea. Encountered about a dozen different situations where the only path down was to down-climb cliffs, exposed with no rope or helmet. My partner Daphne, having had no climbing experience, handled herself extremely well despite the palpable fright. Once we finally got to the Monarch Lakes camp site, we shared a long, "Thank God!" hug.
Once I got home late Sunday night, I researched the route we took down. Someone had recently died on it. I consider us lucky that the worst damage was me a skint shin and her a gash on her arm.
