Ascent Trip ReportThe trip began at 9:00am at the base of the Mountain Road where the notch was already closed to motorized travel for the season. My hiking partner was completely MIA, having been silent for over 24 hours, and I was doubly blessed as while getting ready for my now solo hike I found my hiking boots were 6 hours away. With this excellent combination of news, I double layered wool socks in my running sneakers and decided my feet could handle getting to the now snow-covered peaks of Mansfield.
However, now that I was soloing it, I decided to up the ante and first hike the Long Trail south past Elephant's head and Spruce Peak to Sterling Pond. This wouldn't double my elevation, but would add some spice. The route I took was Long Trail -> Elephant's Head Trail -> Long Trail -> Sterling Pond Trail which put me at the height of the Mountain Road through the notch and ready for Mount Mansfield.
The hike progressed through muddy trail from snow melt and rain -> hail over a bed of slushy snow -> wind driven snow with some drifts underfoot -> spotty clouds with sun breaking through. Sterling lake was utterly gorgeous and I regret I only had a cell phone to capture the views.
