Ascent Trip Report

Josh and I left the house at 5:15am for the 2:45 drive to the DEC parking lot on Woodland Valley Rd. We started hiking the Red Dot trail to Wittenberg and Cornell at 8:30. After crossing a bridge you start climbing immediately, no warm up here. After a bit of climbing you come to the sign-in box which we filled out. We really enjoyed this hike. It was a perfect fall day, the trail was good, and there were enough rock scrambles mixed in to keep things interesting, and the view from Wittenberg is breathtaking. The only watchout I would mention is that a lot of the red dots are faded and hard to see, and the trail is not marked very well in places, especially at the scrambles. We made a couple of wrong turns at one of the scrambles before figuring out how the trail cut up through. Apparently we're not alone because there are trails heading off in wrong directions from people trying to figure this out which makes it even more confusing. We made it to the summit of Wittenberg in about 2 1/2 hours and spent a little time there taking pictures and eating. Awesome views! Eventually a group of about 6 people showed up, so we headed off to Cornell. The hike over to Cornell is not too difficult, and only took about 1/2 hour. It was interesting that as we were hiking across the "Bruins Causway" we were following a fresh set of bear tracking in the mud. Fortunately we never caught up to him. The Cornell Crack is an interesting climb and we took a few more pics here. Someone has left a rope hanging down the crack to help people get up, but we decided "real hikers" wouldn't use the rope and we climbed up without it. There's not much of a view from the summit of Cornell. We got to the summit around noon, took a few pics, and headed back down. We passed a lot of people on the way back down, even a guy hiking up in flip flops. To each his own I guess. We made it back to the car at 2:30pm....about 6 hours round trip. This hike was kind of a last minute decision, but it turned out to be one of our better hikes. It's not an easy hike but I highly recommend it. We were back home in PA by 5:30pm.
