Ascent Trip Report

2.5 hr. drive to DEC parking area off Platt Clove Rd. Started hiking at 8:50am. The weather was cool in the morning, I almost got my gloves out. Decided to take the shortcut over to the snowmobile trail. There are a couple small cairns marking the faint trail to the left. I had read that, but I still walked by it the first time. Apparently it's easy to miss. Fortunately I had my gps with me, and it was telling me I went to far. It was a short backtrack. Shortly into the shortcut you come to a clearing/campsite that they say is an old indian campgroud. There are some faint trails after the campground but I found them hard to follow. Basically, you head uphill from the campsite and keep going straight and you will come to the snowmobile trail in pretty quick. I turned right on the snowmobile trail to make the northern ascent. The trail is very wet and muddy. Eventually you come to a cairn in the trail indicating a trail to the left. This left is the trail to the summit. The easy part is over, it is all climbing from here on out. The summit is marked with a cairn. There are 2 survey markers, one a few feet down to the left and one a few feet down the trail to the right. There are some old plane crash pieces at the summit. If you take the trail to the right you will come to Hurricane Ledge in about 1/8 to 1/4 mile. You do have to go down hill a little but don't pass it up, the views from the ledge are well worth it. I took a pretty good break on the ledge, as the sun was out and warming up the area there. Then I headed back the same way. I made it home shortly before 5pm...just in time for supper!
