Ascent Trip Report

This is a very pleasant walk along a well maintained trail. If you have a spare day and you are near the Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park try this hike. You can park in the Wolverton parking lot which is on the General Sherman road. The Wolverton parking lot is huge and could accommodate probably a hundred cars. Many backpackers use this lot. Take the Lakes Trail up through a forest. When the Lakes Trail forks to the left take the trail straight up the Alta Peak trail. You will reach a saddle and another trail turn left and follow the signs to Alta Peak. When you reach the summit there is a small summit block of rock that will require a couple of class 2 scrambling moves to reach the ammo box with the log book and the Geodetic benchmarks marking the summit.
