Ascent Trip Report

I parked at the Downes Brook trailhead, and ran west along the Kanc Highway to the Sabbaday trailhead, anticipating a long loop. I ascended along the Sabbaday Brook Trail, adding on an out-and-back bushwhack to Fool Killer along the way. Once I reached the ridge crest, I visited all three Tripyramids along the Mt. Tripyramid Trail, and picked up the Kate Sleeper Trail from the slide on South Tripyramid.

I followed the full length of the Kate Sleeper Trail (adding on the 0.1 mile spur path to East Sleeper). On the east side of East Sleeper, the trail trail passes through a long stretch that was extensively damaged by a fairly recent storm, but I appreciated the huge effort that it took to clear the hundreds of blowdowns that had blocked the trail.

At the end of the Kate Sleeper Trail, I followed the Rollins Trail a short distance in each direction, visiting the Mt. Whiteface summit, and the Whiteface ledges, enjoying the view into the Lakes Region of southern NH. Then I backtracked a bit and took the Downes Brook Trail back to my starting point. It seems like the Downes Brook Trail doesn't get as much use as other nearby trails, but I could be wrong. I think there are ten crossings of Downes Brook. I didn't have any trouble rock-hopping the crossings today, but it could be dangerous during spring runoff or after a long period of heavy rain.
