Ascent Trip ReportFrom Mount Marcy I raced to Essex, NY where I hopped on the Ferry to cross Lake Champlain and then drove straight to Stowe, VT. I was hoping to catch the gondola up part of the mountain, hiking the last section of it to the summit, and then hiking back down. However, I arrived at the ticket office at 4:17 and they stop selling tickets at 4:15. So, I drove to the Long Trail TH and began hiking at 4:35.
My legs were a little tight from having hiked Marcy earlier in the day but the trail is pretty much straight up with very few level spots and plenty of rock. I passed a number of people on their way down who warned me that it could be dark by the time I reached the top. I wasn't too worried about it as I'd brought my headlamp and knew the rocky section at the end was rather short.
The Long Trail seemed pretty bland to me. Aside from the Taft Lodge which is a toilet and lean-to about a 1/2 mile from the summit, there was really nothing to see. From the Taft Lodge to the summit you eventually break out into the open and hit a short section of class 3 stuff but really the only noteworthy view was from the summit itself. Since I got my late start I was able to enjoy the views alone and watch a very colorful sunset. Also, got spooked by a glider that snuck up behind me and whizzed overhead.
Knowing that daylight was drawing nearer I quickly skirted back down the trail and cut across an area just beyond the Taft Lodge that led to a ski run. I decided to take this route for one, because it was in the open and the light was much better and two, it was considerably quicker than scrambling back down the rocky trail. I ended up at the gondola and simply hiked the road back to the Long Trail TH where I'd parked my car.
Overall a pretty uneventful summit. The town of Stowe appeared as though it would be a neat place to stay, especially during the winter. I also think if I were to tackle Mansfield again I'd do it in the snow and approach from the West.
