Ascent of Tray Mountain-Southeast Peak on 2008-07-04| Date: | Friday, July 4, 2008 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Tray Mountain-Southeast Peak | | Location: | USA-Georgia | | Elevation: | 4400 ft / 1341 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThis was basically a repeat of my earlier hike to the summit of Tray Mountain. Having not studied the list closely, I missed bagging the SE peak the first time. I cut off about two hours round trip by beginning at Indian Grave Gap instead of Unicoi, thus skipping Rocky Mountain. Once you arrive at Tray, just keep heading north on the AT for about 5 minutes and you are there. No summer view from this peak, but the views from the summit of Tray are still OK, though a bit hazy.
After returning to the car, I replaced half of my time saved by hiking the 1.2 mile trail to High Shoals Falls which is about one mile back towards hwy 75 on FR 283. This trail is recommended, if you're in the area and appreciate waterfalls. It took 29 minutes to cover 1.2 miles down and 31 minutes on the return trip.
