Ascent Trip Report

Was originally supposed to hike San Gorgonio via Vivian Creek today - but the weather had other plans for us.... With a 60% chance of t-storms after 11, Nate and I didn't think it would be safe OR smart. And with only 30% chance of t-storms after 11 am, Baldy was the highest local mountain with the lowest chance of storms (Jacinto was 50%).

Started hiking up the Manker Flats/Ski Hut trail at 6:20 am. Nate and I broke off and I hiked hard up to the ski hut and waited for him. Once he arrived, we stayed together through to the peak - steady up with a few short breaks. Weather was cooperating and we both felt strong. Once at the top (9:45 or so?) - Nate did some radio work and I hiked over to West Baldy and back. By 10:15 the small clouds that had gathered over the top of Baldy had more than doubled - so we quickly gathered our stuff and started descending. Said hi to the HPS group that was coming over Harwood, and went up and over to the Harwood Peak. Descended down Devil's Slide Trail - LOTS of clouds at this point. Amazed at how many people were hiking up when we were hiking down to get out of the storm. Started sprinkling a little just before we hit The Notch - around 11:30 or so. Quick pit stop, and by 11:40 we were hiking down the Baldy Notch Road - that's when the rain hi. Rain jackets + covers for the packs. When it started hailing, we knew we had made the right decision to not hit Thunder or Telegraph Peak. Lots of thunder behind us over the peak and Notch - didn't see any lightning, but there was LOTS of loud thunder. Saw Mamatus clouds over Thunder and Telegraph Peaks and when we hit a fork in the road - we descended to the ski lift parking lot instead of following the road another mile or two past the falls. At the car by 12:30 and the storm was bad and getting worse - but overall we had a good hike and were okay!

Total stats - something like 11.1 miles and 4500 feet of gain - We were out around 6 hours total - not the most ideal training day, but we did the best we could with the weather.

Fun date with Nathaniel!
