Ascent of Battle Mountain on 2013-08-30
|Date:||Friday, August 30, 2013|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||12044 ft / 3671 m|
Ascent Trip ReportMy son, Marshall, and I had summited Longs earlier in the day and could not resist the temptation of such an easy peak to bag so close to Granite Pass. Battle Mountain is less than 1/2 mile NE of Granite Pass and there is not very much elevation change in that distance. The summit mound has two rocky outcrops. The one farthest to the NE is the highest one. Both spots were covered with so much marmot feces that it was hard to find a clean place to sit on the summit for our victory photo. It required 2 hours to reach the summit of Battle Mountain from the Keyhole on Longs. Instead of hiking back to Granite Pass, we made a much more direct descent on the slope SE of Battle Mountain and intersected the Jim Grove's trail, which finally met the main trail back to the parking lot. From the summit of Battle Mountain, we reached our car in less than 2 hours. Not bad for a father and son team whose combined age is over 99 years!
