Ascent Trip Report

Using an older book for reference, I was expecting the road to be open to 11,000+ feet. I can't understand why they closed the road 1100' lower. The road (above and below the closure) was a 4x4 road, but certainly doable for good drivers with good vehicles.

The hike itself was enjoyable. At the 11,000' "trailhead" (they still have the signage), there is now a fork where a trail going more directly to south colony lake is available. We took that up, and the old road to the old trail on the way back. While the former is shorter, it is also steeper.

The final section up the ridge was a surprisingly good trail. There was a brief rocky section (optional class 3 moves) where the cairns were a bit hard to follow, but the trail was quickly reestablished afterwards.
