Ascent Trip Report

If not starting from the good dirt road (county road 162), the drive is the hardest part of the ascent. The road is quite brutal. That said, I'm only a moderately seasoned off-road driver, and I was able to get my Nissan Xterra up to 12,040, and the road actually got quite a bit easier shortly after that, so I bet I could have driven to the road end at 13,700 (I wanted exercise and enjoy hiking).
