Ascent Trip ReportLeft McKinley DEC parking lot at 7:30am and hiked up the very steep red dot trail to the 4-trail junction on top, took a 15 min. break, and turned left onto the blue dot trail to Haynes and Eagle mountains. Nice trail...not too rocky on top. Got to Eagle summit at 10:05am. After a short break I headed back to the trail junction, and continued straight ahead on the blue trail to Balsam Mtn. Ran into a group of about 7 people right at the summit of Balsam, which was fortunate because they pointed me to a spur trail to the right which led to a rock which was the actual summit. They put a little gnome on top of the rock for pictures, which was neat. Apparently the gnome has been to a lot of mountains. Got to the summit at 11:40. There is a nice view on the right just past the summit. Headed back down to the car and arrived at 1:15pm. Well, that was my 9th & 10th catskill mtn...many more to go. Good day...6 hours and 8.8 miles of hiking.
