Ascent Trip Report

Stayed over in Woodstock (Maple Haven Resort Campground - SUPER PLACE) and got an early start. Planned to do Avalon, Field, Willey, and Tom but we cut Tom out because we started running short on time. The Avalon trail up to the A-Z trail split is very easy. Not very steep at all and two easy water crossings. The lower part of this trail was very we when we went through. After the split we followed the Avalon trail up to the summit spur path. The trail quickly gets steep after the split for about .25 miles. It levels off and gets more moderate to the spur. The spur to Avalon summit is short and has one descent scramble. The summit area is nice with a few herd paths all around from people checking out the views. After this we followed the trail up to the Willey Range Trail. This portion kind of flew by. It was never particularly steep, and I was surprised how quickly it passed. At the junction we headed up to Willey summit. There's not much up here for views with the exception of one spur path were some trees are cut short and you can see out over the notch. We snacked at the summit and after a few minutes of quiet a pair of Grey Jays came looking for a handout. Very fun watching them flit around. We then moved on to Willey. The trail to Willey starts out pretty moderate, but after a few hundred yards it gets a little steep with one scramble. After the scramble it moderates and just kind of rolls up and down across the ridge line. There's one large blow down completely blocking the path, but if you look to the right there's a herd path that will cut around the tree and put you back on the path. The summit is pretty easy to miss if you're not paying attention. There's a short spur path that leads about 15 feet to the high point and you're there. We headed back to field where we snacked again, then made our way across the Willey Range trail to get to Mt. Tom. When we got to the Mt. Tom spur path we realized we had spent too much time sitting with the birds. We decided to save Mt. Tom for another day and headed down the A to Z trail and the Avalon trail. The A to Z trail is very nice. Relatively steep at the start but eventually levels out. There's a section right before the junction with the Avalon trail where you run steeply down into a ravine and back up the other side. It's very pretty but a little annoying at the end of a long day! All in all this loop isn't much for views, but each trail runs through it's own unique forest, so it's a very interesting and pretty hike.
