Ascent Trip Report

I made it through Stevens Gulch Road to the trailhead in a rented SUV. In fact, I had this rocky and badly rutted road in mind when deciding to rent an SUV instead of a compact or intermediate-sized car. There was only a risk of bottoming out on one short section of the road; the rest of the road looked passable to most vehicles, albeit fairly bumpy by most standards.

I arrived at the trailhead parking lot a little after 6 am, and it was already half full on this Wednesday. I set out at a manageable hiking pace, and headed first toward Grays Peak, reaching the summit in 1 hr, 45 min. Then I crossed the ridge toward Torreys -- the descent into the saddle was somewhat steep, with light snowcover on some of the rocks. The wind was also very strong along the ridge, occasionally knocking me off balance. Overall, the entire hike was easy, with the 40 minute ridge crossing being the only part that presented any challenge at all. Once I reached the summit of Torreys, I took photos and chatted with others who were up there. Then I headed down, eventually turning back onto the main trail, and returning to the parking lot after a 1 hr 35 min descent.

By that time, the parking lot was full, and many cars were parked along the road. I saw that several regular passenger cars made it all the way to the trailhead.
