Ascent Trip ReportPOLAND'S HIGHEST POINT
My wife Rose and I came to THE BEAUTIFULL SKI RESORT OF ZAKOPANE and the Tetra Mountains to climb MT RYSY, POLAND'S HIGHEST POINT, located due south of Krakow, on the Poland/Slovakia border.
Mt Rysy is a mountain in the crest of the High Tatras, at the Poland/Slovakia border. It has 3 peaks - the Northwest Peak (2499m) and Poland's Highest Point, the Middle Peak (2503m), and the Southeast Peak (2473m). The highest of the 3, the Middle Peak is just inside the Slovakia border, a short scramble away.
6h45 hrs - After a 1 hour bus ride I LEFT THE TATRA NATIONAL PARK MAIN GATE, PALANA PALENCIA (3200 ft). It was too early for the horse carriages, so I had to hike (9km) the dirt access road up to the Hostel at the 1st lake.
8h45 hrs - I LEFT THE HOSTEL after a short break (4600 ft), the trail follows the left side of the first lake, and moderately up to the 2nd lake. Again around the left side and to the other end, where the real climbing starts (5200 ft). The trail climbs steeply up a bare ridge, scrambling, safety chain on the top section of the ridge. You hug the rock face as you work your way around the main spire to the summit.
12h15 hrs - Arrived NORTH WEST SUMMIT (8199') AND POLAND'S HIGHEST POINT. A rocky spire with very little room, full of people, a border post with Polish and Slovak signs. I scrambled down to the col on the Slovak side, then a scramble up to THE MIDDLE PEAK (8212') AND MT RYSY'S HIGHEST POINT. Took photos. Scrambled back to the north side.
A very spectacular jagged rocky mountain, unfortunately not the greatest day for views.
15h30 hrs - BACK TO THE HOSTEL, 2 1/2 hour descent,a short break, I hiked 1km down to the horse carriage stop. I elected for a ride to the gate.
16h30 hrs - Out at the Polona Palencia main gate, a mini bus BACK TO OUR ZAKOPANE HOTEL and Rose, arriving 1 hour later.
From here we will continue our "Eastern Europe 2005 Tour", the next main destination is Pobierowo, Poland, a sea side resort on the Baltic Sea. Mykailo's Mom and Dad and his Brother live and work there.
