Ascent Trip ReportMy partner-in-crime and I arrived at the Flume Visitor Center at 10 AM. We started up the bike path shortly after arriving.
The bike path went past several trailheads, going steadily uphill at times, and made me wonder how well a cyclist would do on this path. We only went as far as the Liberty Spring Trail junction and then headed up that trail.
The Liberty Spring Trail, a part of the AT, started out with an easy grade to the Flume Slide Trail junction and stayed easy to a notable water crossing, and after that, the grade increased slightly and eventually became steep in many parts. My friend was 50 pounds heavier than me and hadn’t hiked in two years, so we took it very slow.
At Liberty Spring tentsite, we were short on water, so I purified stream water for the first time ever. The experience was fun, and I couldn’t wait to drink it!
After the sites, the trail kept its steep grade to the Franconia Ridge Trail junction. My friend didn’t know if he could make it to the summit or not, so I assured him that we could take long, frequent breaks.
We soon left the AT and turned right on the Franconia Ridge Trail, which was more moderate. Once we got above the trees, the Franconia area was visible, and my friend was amazed and said that this was worth the trudge. We then came to a ledge with the summit looming ahead, and we took pictures of each other standing on the summit from the ledge, and after the pics, we reached the summit 5 hours after leaving the visitor center parking lot.
We took a 45 minute break at the top and ate sandwiches while taking in the view, which was mostly obscured by clouds, but Lafayette, Franconia Notch, Cannon, nearby Flume, and the ancient volcanic crater made up by the Franconia, Garfield, and Twin Ranges were visible. After the clouds rolled in, obscuring everything, we headed back to the TH in 2.5 hours.
