Ascent Trip Report

I arrived at the Ferncroft Rd. parking area at around 10 AM, where there were a few cars already parked. After gearing up, I found the trail, which followed dirt roads for about 1/2 mile. It then veered left onto a standard path. I soon crossed into WMNF land (and the Sandwich Range Wilderness), and after that, the trail started going through a woodsy area with an easy grade. A distance after that, it started climbing a bit and soon reached some ledges, where there was a restricted view over the trees which was even more restricted by low clouds. The sun poked its way through the clouds for a few moments, but by the time I got to the beginning of the scramble, it was socked-in.

The scramble was quite hairy in spots and would be a little tricky for shorter people. The footing in spots was also hairy, and at times I was climbing up steep, smooth rock faces. Before the scramble, I passed a father with his kids, and at the scramble, I saw a man and woman and passed them as well. I would be all alone until I reached Camp Rich on Dicey's Mill Trail.

At the top of the scramble was Whiteface's south summit, which was open and would have a good view on a clear day. Nothing but white here, unfortunately . There appeared to be a spot for a summit marker and an old bar sticking out of the rock. I rested here and then headed for the summit, 0.3 mile away, which I reached at 12:15 PM.

Whiteface's summit is wooded and viewless, but has a cairn and a flag recently placed by a military veteran honoring the New Englanders who died in two missions in Iraq. I took a summit shot for proof and then headed down Rollins Tr, which was 2.5 miles long and led to Dicey's Mill Trail.
