Ascent Trip Report

Typical peakbagging hike for the family. Daniel wanting to climb faster and me making sure it was an enjoyable outing for Karen. The TH is easy to find parking well marked. Right across from the Double Top Mountain (slighty under 3500 feet) that was calling my name for another day.

We slowly picked our way up. The hike reminded me a lot of the Hunt Trail up Baxter Peak only with far less scrambling and the shoulder between the two brothers was very wide and seemed endless to the junction with the two trails. Lots of huge toads along the way. We took the northern route knowing we started late and did not have time to wrap around and do South Brother. Plus Daniel and I had already crossed Coe and OJI off our list.

The hike up the mountain take the trail to a much smaller width nearly down to herd size in places and not a good place for poles. The top has nice views of Kathadin and all its subpeaks and Double Top. Danny and I left Karen there to go try find the herd path to Fort Mountain. We were warned by a man passing us it was no herd path - that in places it was more of herd trail for rabbits!
We left Karen thinking we could make the 2 mile RT quickly and she could enjoy the sun.

We were wrong! Even with the wind the blackflies did not dissapate and Karen was eaten alive. Our trip was not fast as route finding and obstacles were challenging. By the time we got back (1 and half hours later) she was marked well on the neck and face! Mitigation would be needed that night to make up for that!
