Ascent Trip Report

Drove to end of paved Dutch Creek Rd from Route 194 near Valle Crucis.

Road ends in a parking area near a log cabin. Trail commences immediately on a dirt forest road that shortly requires fording a stream (at least it does after a week of constant rainstorms). After a half mile or so this road will take you steadily uphill to a T. Turn left. Right leads in a 1/4 mile to a posted clearing complete with red windsock. Meanwhile back at the T, it might be a good idea to mark the spot so as not to miss the turn on the return.

Two minutes after making the left at the T a grass covered shelf road branches left from the main forest road. The main forest road continues to climb for another half mile. Stay on it until you reach a clearing. Just before the clearing you'll pass a sign alerting you to a skeet range ahead. You make even pass thru
some clay pigeon remains. You'll also pass countless yellow POSTED signs.

Assuming all is quiet you will pass thru the clearing and the range
and look for a mowed path on the far end of the saddle that will lead to the signed entrance to the Hanging Rock trail which is easy to follow to the summit rock crag. It took me 50 minutes to return from the summit to my car at the end of Dutch Creek Rd. Probably 1.5 to 2.0 miles distance.

Took me 2 hours to ascend. Mainly because there was skeet shooting under way and I elected to bushwhack around it. From the T I walked left the two minutes to the grassy road and followed it across a stream and then a few paces later at a pile of dead brush and branches I followed an ATV track upslope to a ridge. I continued following the ATV track atop the ridge until I arrived at a hairpin turn of a forest road. At the turn there is a stack of firewood and a circle of large rocks. I hiked the upslope road until it decided to head downhill. I bushwhacked up to the ridge where I met up with the Hanging Rock Trail and I continued to the summit.

On the return I hiked all the way down the trail into the clearing and as there was no one around I simply made my way thru to the forest road and quickly enough back to the car.
