Ascent Trip Report

Note: Although this peak is labeled "Meaden Peak" on the USGS 7.5 minute topo, consensus appears to be that it is mislabeled and that name properly belongs to the 10,561' summit to its WNW.

The drive is the crux of this climb, or you can walk roads as necessary. The goal is to get to the Sand Mountain trailhead, shown on the topo. It is easy to take county road 129 north from Steamboat Springs to a point north of Steamboat Lake, and to turn south and west onto county road 62. This will bring you to Forest Road 42.

Although FR 42 showed some signs of recent maintenance in the first mile or two, most of it is rough, high-clearance and/or 4WD driving. (Note that there is a seasonal gate at the forest boundary. I cannot find my notes on when this gate is closed; you should find out before driving up there if you're planning an early season climb.)

About a mile or so past the forest boundary you'll find the first intersection with the FR 480 loop. We didn't like the looks of this at this point, nor did it look good when we passed the upper end of that segment. So we continued westerly to the other end of the loop and took that road. It was quite rough and rocky in spots, and was wet on the day we were there. I wouldn't have continued driving without 4WD and good tires. We then took the spur (FR 480-1A?) to the trailhead.

From the trailhead a good trail leads toward the communications site on Sand Mountain. This can be followed to a point east of the saddle south of your target (see the GPS track). From here, fairly easy cross-country travel will take you to the summit, which is the southwestern-most of several rocky bumps on the ridge.
