Ascent Trip Report

A CHERISHED FAMILY OUTING (Rose, Michael, Celine, Marcus, Patrick, Brice and Emilie).

My wife Rose and I drove down to Lilburn GA (just E of GA) to visit our son and his family. Whenever we get together we try to get out for a family outing and this trip was no different. We decided to go to Springer Mountain and the Benton Mackaye trail loop. I choose this hike mainly to check-out the start of the nb AT which I plan to do in the future.

We drove in 2 cars, to the parking at Big Stamp Gap, usfs road 42 in north Georgia - a fairly steep, dirt/gravel, forest road. We left sb on the AT for a short hike to the Springer summit. A CARETAKER, with a long white beard, was camped on the summit since early March, recording the AT nb THRU HIKERS.

We visited Springer Mountain shelter, and took a 3 1/2 mile Benton Mackaye trail loop over Ball Mountain back to Big Stamp Gap, going thru some beautifull rhododendron thicket........ One needs to hike this loop in mid-June, with the rhododrendron in full bloom. A beautifull easy outing.
