Ascent Trip Report

Left my car at Mono Pass Trailhead and carpooled with Mike and Larry (who met me the night before at Tuolumne camp site) to the trailhead adjacent to the Yosemite Park exit booth thing. At 3mi, Dana is such a short trip that I knew it wouldn’t take more than a half day to finish it (even with 3000ft of gain), so I planned to do a loop down and over from Dana to Peak 12565 and then up to Gibbs, returning down Gibbs’s western slope and eventually meeting up with the Mono Pass Trail.

Mike, Larry, and I got a leisurely late start and made decent time along the clearly-defined trail for about 1.5mi (to 10980ft). At that point they got hit with the altitude, and I continued alone.

Saw at least 25 people on my way up. Trail was in good shape and not difficult to follow. Snow was a nonissue, too. The two 100ft-long snow sections I passed were sun-cupped nicely for footing.

Didn’t find a register up top. Hung out for a good half hour, chatting with the other people on top and hoping to catch a glimpse of Mike or Larry down below. Never did see them. 2hr 15min from car to summit. Not a super fast but it did leave me with plenty of time left, as anticipated, to continue on towards Gibbs.

I said bye to the 6 people on the summit smoking weed and singing 80s tunes (true story) and ventured down the west slope. From the summit to the saddle was mostly dirt with the occasional rock (and a small boulder section I downclimbed so to avoid some snow). The gully/valley opening up to Tuolumne meadows to the west was gorgeous.

Next, to Peak 12565.
