Ascent Trip ReportWe did the Trois Sommets loop, a 15km route from the Park Reception Centre over the summits of Mont Saint-Joseph, Mont Victoria and Mont Megantic. It's a well-maintained (and very well-signed) trail with only one short section of gravel laid down, and a very brief road walk near the summit of Megantic. Most of the rest is over soil'n'boulder (with some steps installed) through the mostly conifer forest. The last 2.6 km from Mont Megantic to the trailhead is along a hiking/mountain bike path, so that's more wide and level. This is a nice day hike and surprisingly free of crowds (we passed about 8 people on a sunny June Saturday!). The views from Saint-Joseph and Megantic are good. Megantic hosts an astronomical observatory, so there is some infrastructure on the summit for that. On the plus side, the "Pavillon de la Voie Lactee" (Milky Way Pavilion) near the summit is open to the public during the daytime hours and is a very comfy place to take a lunch break if the black flies are bad. It would probably be a good lunch stop in winter as well, when all the hiking trails are opened as snowshoe trails.
