Ascent Trip Report

This was a failed attempt at Presidential Traverse, failed due to a perfect recipe of bad timing, forgetting crucial gear (raingear and sunshades, among others), and failure to exercise for a few weeks. I was therefore rather tired after the grueling start up the summit of Madison, and subsequently blazed along the Gulfside Trail without bothering to summit any of the peaks. While bypassing the summit of Washington, the rain came down, and I made it to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut rather soaked. The next day the hut staff informed us that the storm was about to break, so we opted to retreat down the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail (an icy challenge without microspikes despite it being June) and come back another time.
The Lakes of the Clouds Hut was the one saving grace of this poorly-planned expedition. The staff was wonderful, the food delicious, and its location--right on the banks of ethereal lakes that reflected the blue sky and watered the green shrubs and lichen in the midst of a bleak and rocky landscape--was the stuff of songs.
