Ascent Trip Report

I did this with Chris Zapotocky after we did 10607 near Mt. Taylor. Despite GPS and having read old trip reports, finding our way to the trailhead involved a bit of adventure. We headed down the forest road from La Mosca Lookout to the turnoff from the Grants Rd. where we headed right, signed as toward San mateo (left takes you back to Grants). Part of the problem is that parts of the forest roads have been rerouted and apparently in some cases renumbered since the Garmin map I had in my GPS. We made a wrong turn and found ourselves back almost to San Mateo on what the map calls 334 but now appears to be signed 456. After backtracking we turned onto FR239 (as per previous directions). It gets pretty rough once you pass through the National Forest gate: rocky, rutted, and washboarded. No problem for a patient driver in Jeep or truck, but not recommended for a passenger car. The spur road from 239 toward the peak--apparently closed on an earlier occasion--was open and actually marginally less bumpy than FR239. We reached the posted gate and noticed that a jeep track headed slightly up hill to the right just outside the fence. We parked in a small wooded clearing about 0.4 mi.from the hp coordinates and hiked up the fence line on the National Forest side to the crest. At that point, we hopped the fence (not posted anywhere along fence line after signage on gate below. I guess this must be private property as well, but you won't be on it for more than a few minutes. The whole hike took us about 40 minutes round trip including several minutes for signing the log and photo ops; less than 10 minutes spent across the fence). A cairn contained a register with many familiar names.
