Ascent Trip ReportI had to be back for a Memorial Day BBQ early this afternoon, I also wanted to bag the Kinsmans today. To do both, I got up at the insanenly early hour of 3 AM, on the trail by 5 AM, off at 11:45 AM and home, showered and at the party by 2 PM - done!
I wasn't sure what to expect, so I packed a full-on winter pack. Of course, it turns out the only two things I left behind would have come in the most handy.
Temp was 31 degrees at the base when I started. Traile started out wait, then very wet, then muddy, then slushy, then packed granular, then 8" of fresh sticky stuff that I had to break out. I was surprised that the trail was well-packed and well-travelled to Kinsman, but the trail was completely fresh between Kinsman and South Kinsman. I had to break out about 8" of sticky snow - the diadvantage of being first on the mountain. Luckily, it's a failrly easy trail between the two.
I ran into the first folks of the hike just after I returned to the north peak. I ran into some folks from my home town - small hiking world.
Going back down felt like hiking through a full rain storm - the sun was up and melting all the snow from the trees. I found that my ball cap worn backwards was great for keeping the snow and cold meltwater from going down my neck.
The skies were beautiful - weather was beautiful. Awesome morning on the mountain.
