Ascent Trip Report

I decided to use the Griffith Trail rather than the South Loop of the Charleston Peak trail, which was good because I found out later that the South Loop had lots of snow on it. Take either Harris Spring Rd or Barricade Rd. from Hwy 157 (Kyle Canyon Rd.). A few miles after they join there is a sign showing the road to Griffith Peak Trail to the right, 5 miles. It is a very rough road, with lots of rock. I was on my dual sport Honda, even with that it wasn't a fun road. High clearance 2WD might be OK. There is space for camping at the TH if desired. The trail starts out on an old road bed and then narrows down after a mile or so. Nice views from the saddle below Harris Mt, looking down at the village. There is a poor use trail going up to Harris but it was getting late so I didn't go up there. When I got near the base of the mountain there was a large snow patch covering the trail so I had to search for it a bit. My GPS map shows it going around the west side but it actually goes on the east side. After looping all the way around the mountain, through many snow drifts, the trail started going down hill so I thought I must have missed the summit trail in the snow, so I bushwhacked up from the east side. Once at the top I found the trail among the snow patches, I had turned off a little too soon as the summit trail branches off from the South Loop of the Charleston Trail. There was a large snow drift about 10' high on the summit ridge but the register was free of snow. It took me 2:17 up, spend about 30 min. there and then bushwhacked down the NE side to the trail, reaching the TH in 1:28.
