Ascent Trip ReportGreat day, 38*F in the Spruceton PA at 12noon. Ice still forming on some of the higher cliffs. Noticed 6 others signed in at the register to do Rusk ahead of me. Hiked up to the hairpin and shot my azimuth and headed across the brook. Encountered 3 others on their way down. I hit a ridge with Hunter Brook to my left and a tributary on my right, held this for about 800m where it flattens out a bit, Ahead it steepens. I took a new azimuth slightly west of my original line. At this point the hike ascends some rocky areas, typical of catskill mountains, easy to find the weakness to pass. I kept drifting west opting to do this purposely so as to hit the summit directly. This part of the hike was a little more intense bushwhacking. After about 600m I arrived at the western end of the summit. It took only a few minutes to find the grey canister. Signed in and took a new azimuth almost due east, I thought 500m should get me beyond the steep stuff and leave me in the col which it did. I should mention that I was able to follow herd paths from the can to the point where I turned south to descend. I found the descent difficult and at one point I think I was in the Hunter brook? the rock here is unstable and loose, it sucks, so at one point I began to push west again hoping to hit the same ridge I used to ascend, which I did, just as I came upon the hairpin, oh well. I think if I had to do it again I would begin my descent before going through the pine forest which is encountered just off the summit heading east. like wise for the ascent, I probably wouldn't trend as far west and just continue on my original line. Good hike all in open woods for the most part. No undergrowth yet.
