Ascent Trip ReportUNSUCCESSFUL CLIMB OF EL TORO-SOUTH PEAK FOR THE 2ND TIME - - - RESULTED IN TICK BITES (my first unsuccessfull attempt was on 1990-02-11)
At 7 oclock in the morning I drove and met-up with guide, Andres "Chivo", at a restaurant in EL Naranjos, on rte 200 just West of Miramar, located on the south side of El Torro. I first met Chivo the week before, by asking the locals if they knew of a guide that would lead me up El Torro. Chivo never worked as a guide but apparently knew the mountain.
We walked to his house on the slopes of the mountain to get his gear, an adobe house all open with just a roof. From his house we hiked up a dirt road to cattle pastures high up on the mountain. We climbed higher by following cattle paths before starting a BUSHWACK to the top - very rocky, rough and at places very dense brush with thorns & spines, lot of stops/dead ends, had to backtrack/go around in circles a few times, few steep sections/on all fours, got scratched up pretty good (blood). I was not properly dressed for this type of hike, short sleeves !!!
We decided to turn back few hundred plus feet below the summit, the trail being too dense full of thorns and spines (The main summit has communication towers with a full time attendant). We took a good break before descending to the bottom, more or less backtracking the same route. Chivo gave me a beer when we got back to his house. A very nice person, he did a good job.
Few days after this adventure I started breaking out with very itchy sores (6 places),I believe they were TICK BITES from the climb. A Dermatologist confirmed this, gave me cream & pills, said that lime disease is not a problem in Mexico.
I successfully summitted El Torro's main peak on 2004-03-04 and I refer you to its TR for an interesting read.
