Ascent Trip ReportI did an out-and-back from the south, taking the Lincoln Woods - Bondcliff Trail approach.
I had to break out the trail along the Bondcliff Trail during the last few miles before the summit. Any previous tracks were completely filled in with a foot of fresh powder, and the snow was much deeper in the drifted areas. My pace slowed drastically with the extra work required. There was only one time that I thought I had lost the trail (and in fact, I hadn't), but otherwise the route-finding wasn't difficult as long as I paid attention.
Clouds rolled in just as I reached the summit, and so I couldn't take in the view, which is supposed to be among the best in the White Mountains. I could see West Bond a little bit, but that was about it. This wasn't a good above-treeline day either, as the gusts threatened to throw me off my feet, and I was repeatedly pelted with pieces of ice.
Ten minutes into my descent, the clouds cleared, leaving deep blue sky above. So, after the arduous ascent through fresh powder, I reached the summit within a bad window for getting a view; such is my luck. But that's OK, because I certainly plan on returning to this celebrated spot again and again.
