Ascent Trip ReportInterestingly enough, we arrived on Pikes peak the day AFTER the annual Pikes Peak Race where cars race up the mountain at break neck speeds of 130+ mph. The buzz around the mountain was about some guy that drove off the side this year and rolled his car 10 times but managed to walk away. I decided to take the drive a little easy in light of the recent events.
Some interesting tidbits...
1) They actually test the temperature of your brakes when you are driving down to make sure you don't fry them by riding the brakes down the whole mountain.
2) Some dudes pushed a piano up to the top for a fundraiser back in the 90's.
3) The song America the beautiful was inspired by the sights atop of Pikes Peak. The author visited the summit shortly after the cog wheel train line was built to reach the summit in 1869.
After Pikes Peak we did a quick visit to the "Garden of the Gods" and "Balance Rock" (See Photo) before driving up to Denver and getting some dinner at the Denver Chop House and Brewery near The Coors Field.
