Ascent to Mount Si-South Face of Haystack on 2008-05-09| Date: | Friday, May 9, 2008 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Point Reached: | Mount Si - South Face of Haystack | | Location: | USA-Washington | | Elevation: | 4167 ft / 1270 m |
Ascent Trip ReportSet out from the trailhead at around 9:30. Hiked nonstop 3 miles to around 3000 feet. The trail had periodic patches of consolidated snow that was icy and slick. Put on crampons and continued to the summit. The snow got heavier as I neared the top. Near the haystack it was probably 4 feet deep, a fact I discovered when I postholed through the crust. Although in the morning the mountain was clouded over, by the time I reached the summit the skies had cleared. Clear views of various surrounding peaks, including Mt Tenerife and Mt Washington. The snow at the top was impressive...at 4000 feet in May!
Had a quick snack near the Haystack, and then made my descent.
