Ascent Trip Report

Using the guide as my "pace car", we went at a slower speed than my natural instinct would have been but it assured success and made reaching certain altitude levels (12K, 14K) easier than I had done before on hikes I'd done in the States. The last segment to reach the summit from Kibo huts certainly could not be considered "easy" by any stretch of the imagination, but was very much manageable.

The weather near the summit was cold (minus 6 degrees F) but the layers, a great set of OR mittens, and some chemical toe warmers meant that the only part of me that was cold at all was the small patch around my face left uncovered.

And to my surprise, it wasn't windy as most people seem to experience. The thing I'll always remember about the hike was once on top with the sun rising over Africa, the sun light on the glaciers was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined and brought tears to my eyes.

We took pictures from Uruhu point and were heading down by 7am, then got back to Kibo Hut by 9am, took a quick nap then headed down all the way to the Marangu huts to make a short one and a half hour walk back to the gate on day 6.

Overall, an absolutely wonderful experience!
