Ascent Trip ReportBACKPACKING THE AT AND NH 4000 FOOTERS......TODAY IS NH 4000 FOOTER #1 Out for a backpacking trip in the Whites for the whole month of August. I started on 1993-07-26 at Sherburne Pass Rte #4 in Vermont (see TR of this date) Today I bagged my very first NH 4000 footer, Mount Moosilauke. The ascent to Mount Moosilauke-South peak from Jeffers Brook shelter was moderate to steep..... the last section being very steep and rocky. I found it tough, took a number of granny breaks. The open ridge walk is awesome. The AT nb descent to Beaver Brook shelter, after going over Mont Blue and coming back to the AT from a visit to Mount Jim, is steep with very large rock steps...... straight down about 2000'. The AT follows the brook, numerous beautifull cascading falls. I found it murder on the knees especially with a 40#+ backpack. The shelter was very crowded.
