Ascent Trip ReportWe got some bad news yesterday while in the Augusta, GA area . My Mom is very close to her end and we need to abort our trip and drive north to Welland, Ontario (she would pass away on March 12, the same day as her only sister Ida). ..... the plan was to County High Point to the East Coast then north along the coast. So this morning we drove west to Atlanta before starting our way north on I-75.
On the way out of Atlanta I decided to take a short detour to the Fulton CoHP. PB gives 3 Candidate High Point Areas, located at the north end of the county in a beautiful upscale neighbor hood. I have numbered the Areas a la PB and visited them as listed below.
From I-285 Loop, exit 27 at the north end of Atlanta, we traveled north on Hwy#400/#19 to exit 11, where we took a left on Windward Parkway, 6.2 miles turned left on Birmingham Road, 1.9 miles turned right on Freemanville Road.
AREA 3 .... we drove north on Freemanville Road for 1.5 miles to the driveway for house #16455, signed " Prichetts Mountain", on the left. We drove to the rear of the house, and the lady who came to the door with 2 yapping dogs, gave us permission to proceed .... answering my question, "Well I was told that it's (BM) back there, but I've never seen it." I walked 50 feet to the high ground behind the house and looked all over the thick blanket of leaves for the BM with no luck .... I only found a grave site with a small plaque "MAJOR, A GOOD DOG". The construction of the house probably removed the original natural HP.
AREA 2 ..... we continued north on Freemaville Road .1 mile to house #16485 on the left. We drove up to the house which is behind the HP bump, I knocked on the door with "WRIGHTS" to one side .... the lady all knew about the HP, "Yes this one and the one over there (pointing towards Area 3) are supposed to be the highest point of the county, that's why we built the laberynth on top." I was somewhat confused with the word laberynth until I got to the top of the bump at about 25 yards from the house. They built a labrynth with rocks, really cool ... you probably have to walk over 100yards to get to the HP ????.
AREA 1 ..... we again continued on Freemanville for another .12 miles to a left turn on Heritage Pass (a very upscale new subdivision under construction), at 100 yards to the left (house #1823) we drove up the steep driveway to the house on the summit area. The present natural HP is to the left at 20 yards in a lot presently being dug up for a new home. I don't know what it will look like tomorrow ???
This whole part of Georgia is beautiful ..... a lot of rolling hills, nice woods and a lot of recent construction, a very enjoyable detour.
