Ascent Trip Report

This is Day 11 of my 18 Day trip to New Zealand and the start of a 39km-3 day trek on the Routeburn Track in Mount Aspiring National Park. From Te Anau I bussed to the Routeburn Divide and the TH. It was a cloudy day with no views for the short 13km climb to Mackenzie Hut. A lot of singing birds today.

The highlight is without question on the second day, the climb to Harris Saddle (divides Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks) followed by the stiff climb to Conical Hill (1517M) ...... an aspiring panorama of the surrounding peaks above the Hollyford valley hidden in low clouds ... awesome place.

The last day is a very short 8km downhill walk from the Routeburn Flats Hut to the road end where a shuttle bus comes to pick up the hikers (very organized) for the ride to Queenstown .... a dirt/bumpy ride with outstanding scenery as you skirt the Wakatipu Lake.

The Routeburn not at all difficult, it probably could be done in a day, but I loved my short days, very enjoyable.
The Routeburn is spectacular (a bit of Milford/Kepler combined) however the Kepler ridge walk is unparralled.

Tomorrow I will bus to Mount Cook to check out the area.

******I called Rose at Queenstown YHA to find out that Celine had her baby boy today "Patrick". This make #2 for her.
