Ascent Trip Report

Parked across Route 73 in Giant / Roaring Brook parking lot because AMR lot was full (only one lot plowed). Walked up AMR road to trail head, then put on cross-country skis for Lake Road. Lake Road was packed down with from other skiers and snowmobile tracks. Despite the signs saying no motorized vehicles or bicycles allowed, we were passed by 4 snowmobiles on our trip alone. Skier 3.5 miles of gentle uphill to Lower Ausable Lake dam. The skiing was more uphill than I figured and caused me to drink more water than I had planned. Took off skis and left them against dam building.

Put on hiking boots and snowshoes. Hiked the 1.7 miles via the Weld trail to the junction with Sawteeth. Trail was very well packed down and saw several other groups. Trail over to Sawteeth had just been broken a few hours before by a pair of women, despite the fact that the snow had come on Friday and we were hiking on Sunday. We ran into another group of 5 coming down as we were ascending.

I was almost out of water even before the junction and was eating small amounts of snow on the way up (better to eat snow on the way up because you are warmer and save the water for the way down when you don't get as warm descending). I even asked a couple people if they had extra water. One woman gave me about 4 oz. The group we met coming down Sawteeth left their packs at the junction and didn't have any extra with them. Upon our descent I found they left me a bottle of water. I was so very thankful, I wish I could tell them.

We ran into one tricky area on the 0.5 mile Sawteeth section and had to break out Richard's rope. The view from the top was one of the best I've seen thanks to the perfect weather conditions. It was clear and crips. We summited late in the day (approximately 4PM) due to our late start. We left the parking area at 11AM and returned at 9PM. The snowshoe down the Weld trail was pleasant and easy as was the XC ski back to the car since it was generally downhill.
