Ascent Trip Report

Well acclimatized from the Mauna Loa ascent of 2 days before, we hiked up from the Mauna Kea Visitor Centre starting at 7.30AM. One other party of two set off at the same time. I shadowed the other group as Laura went at "her own" speed :) The hiking trail is easy to follow and most of it is somewhat sandy, but straight-forward to walk on - much easier than the route on Mauna Loa (not that it was "difficult", but just less even).

Enjoyable, expansive views along the way, and then joining the driving road at right near the top. I passed the other two hikers on the paved road at the top and then waited a couple of hours for Laura to join me. She was enjoying the sights and taking it easy - I did the same on the summit, staying out of the wind by dipping just below the crest.

We then headed down together and went to Cronies in Hilo to feast on some ribs...mmm...
