Ascent Trip ReportAs you drive south on rte 73 in Keene Valley at noon hour, you will see the sun directly over the summit of the mountain straight ahead of you, aptly called "Noonmark Mountain".
I came here to the Adirondacks, together with my work colleagues Guy Hebert and Karl Weinrich, to climb this Mountain primarily because of Guy's love for the mountains and his passion to introduce others to hiking in the Adirondack. As to why he chose "Noonmark" I do not know, however I would guess its due to the easy access, short hiking distance and the super reward once on the summit - a 360 degree panorama.
I would find out years later that the only 4000 footer in the High Peak Region of the Adirondack with these same characteristics is "Cascade Mountain", which I climbed for the very first time the following year(1982-09-26). Again it was Guy who organized this hiking trip for 11 Enginneering Office colleagues.
We drove down early in the morning, parking our car at the parking area for the start of the Roaring Brook Trail to Giant Mountain, off of rte 73 at St Huberts (no relation to Guy). We walked west on the south side Ausable Club Road for about half a mile, up a hill to the TH on the left side of the road. At the first Trail junction we followed the Trail to the right for Noonmark, the left leads to Dix Mountain. The Trail climbs moderately to very steep, negotiating a few rock ledges and a number of open bare rock sections requiring some scrambling. The summit rewards you with a super panorama of Giant and the other High Peaks. Once back down to the car we drove home, arriving early evening after a very enjoyable memorable day.
Later in life I would always look back at this "Noonmark" hike as my introduction to my climbing passion. I must thank Guy, a life-long friend and a real super guy for his initiative and leadership. We would do many more memorable climbs together.
