Ascent Trip Report

After visiting the Denton CoHP (a drive up, see Daniel Smith's TR of 2002) we found our way to Decatur and picked up Hwy #287 North to Alvord. Just before arriving Alvord we exited #287 right on #287Business and drove 1.2 miles to a right on FM1655 (Wickham Street) in Alvord, crossed the RR Tracks to an immediate right on Pine Street East, .2 miles left on Shankle Street followed by an immediate right on Beyette Street, .2 miles east stayed right (straight) at fork on CR2590, .68 miles turned left on CR2585 which jogs/winds northeasterly, 2.8 miles turned right on CR2475, .12 miles arrived at crest of road and the Entrance to the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands (free access to the public) on the left. The sign reads "WELCOME TO NATIONAL GRASSLANDS".
We parked here, the Ball Knob Hill HP is 100 yards to the east.

Across the road (west) is a gated private property "Kelley # 114", Shadow Ridge Farm, leading 100 yards to BALL KNOB HILL WEST, capped with a residence and barn buildings. The owner walked down to talk to us as we were getting ready to climb Ball Knob Hill. A nice chap but not really ..... we told why we were there and that the Ball Knob West was of interest, but he didn't offer us entry and I didn't ask for it. He made a point of saying that it's private land. From Ball Knob Hill you can plainly see his buildings.

BALL KNOB HILL .... 200 yards RT
At the Grasslands Entrance I walked through the open man gate climbed the short distance to the summit, mostly open areas with cedar trees.
I found a summit cairn and 3 Benchmarks about 20 yards apart "USC&G Survey Triangulation Markers, Ball Knob 1956". Outstanding views, fire pit to one side.

From the above Grasslands Entrance we continued south then east on CR2475 for .4 miles to the crest of the road and the Ball Knob Cemetery complete/with a Texas Historic Plaque.
We walked the very-old/most-interesting cemetery, unfortunately it's in disrepair with a lot of damaged headstones.
I walked to the top/north end of the cemetery, hopped the fence and climbed to the summit .... great open views, fire pit with evidence of camping.

I purchased Outland Pants and Snake Chaps while in Mckinney the last few days. I wore them for the first time on this hike, I felt sort of "safer" !!! probably all in my head. It's something that I've meaning to add to my gear for years.
