Ascent Trip ReportI finished off 2012 by hiking the Tripyramids and Scaur Peak. Starting from the Kancamagus Highway, I followed the Pine Bend Brook Trail and the Mt. Tripyramid Trail across the three peaks until I reached South Tripyramid, and I returned along the same route. I tacked on Scaur during the return hike.
A couple of storms passed through New England in the past week, leaving abundant fresh snow. The lower, flat part of the Pine Brook Trail was well broken out from the previous day, but higher up the tracks were obliterated by drifts in most places. It seems like the higher terrain is subject to constant wind, despite the tree cover. It was slow going on the steep slopes, as it was difficult to gain traction in deep snow, even with snowshoes. Each brook crossing also presented a minor challenge, as the snow-covered ground tends to slope steeply down toward the water. The north approach to North Tripyramid may have been easier because the usually ice-covered rocks and ledges were completely covered with snow.
